Suncell solar panels have been specifically designed for heating swimming pools. They conform to BS6785 and BS EN 12975 (the British standard for solar heating systems for swimming pools) and are accredited products qualifying for Government 'Clear Skies' renewable energy grants subject to the rules of that scheme.
Suncell solar panels are unglazed and in the 'low temperature' operating range typical of swimming pools the efficiency of an unglazed flat plate solar panel is generally equal to that of the more expensive glazed and insulated panel. To work efficiently and to minimise heat losses solar panels used to heat swimming pools need a high flow rate and the temperature rise through the panels is best kept as low as possible ie 1– 2°C.
The Suncell solar panel comprises a polypropylene collector plate with header pipes welded to each end. An aluminium frame is available which is assembled around the polypropylene matrix enabling easy attachment of the panel to a sloping roof or ground support. The use of a specially formulated grade of polypropylene is resistant to corrosion by pool chemicals and saltwater and ensures a long life. Pool water is circulated through Suncell solar panels to absorb heat. The panels are branched into the existing filtration circuit and a heat exchanger is not needed.
Benefits of Suncell Solar Heating
The most obvious benefit of a Suncell solar heating system is that the heat is free. The use of solar energy saves the capital cost of a boiler if installed in place of a conventional heating system making the payback period relatively short. For an already heated pool the attraction is savings in fuel costs when the solar panels are used to provide a 'base load' heat and the conventional heater is used as back up. Suncell panels are most effective from May to September in direct sunshine although they will also continue to produce some heat when skies are overcast. At night and in winter and wet weather when there is little or no useful radiation they must be taken out of service. With Suncell solar panels pool temperatures in the mid to high 20’s°C can generally be achieved throughout the 'swimming season' in the UK and 30°C or more during spells of hot weather. The use of solar energy is the environmentally way to heat a swimming pool and to contribute to cutting down 'greenhouse gas' emissions. Suncell solar panels are maintenance free except for winter frost protection and a five year guarantee is offered subject to published conditions.
